Lionel Pierson is currently studying a double degree in Music and Engineering at the University of Western Australia in Perth. Having recently completed his Bachelor of Music (Percussion Performance) with Honours, he hopes to finish the second half of his double degree in Engineering in 2014.
Lionel has been involved in Vocal Evolution since 2006, joining the award winning chorus while still in high school. He quickly established himself as an invaluable member of the organisation, establishing his place as a coach and soon became a section leader. Not long after this, he was offered the Assistant Director position, being wicked cool under Alex Morris in the ongoing development of the chorus. In February 2012, Lionel took on the Musical Directorship of the chorus, leading the chorus to an international 14th place ranking and the highest score achieved by any Australian Chorus at the 2013 Barbershop Harmony Society International Convention in Toronto.
Over recent years, Lionel has also been involved with the WA Youth Orchestra, WA Charity Orchestra, percussion ensembles: Defying Gravity and Piñata Percussion, vocal sextet Just After 5, exciting a cappella ensemble Naya Chorale, nationally acclaimed barbershop quartets 3 Men and a Tenor and RefriDgerator.
Guest Director - Adam Brockway
Adam is an accomplished graduate of the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts where he studied primarily as a violinist. In his first year at WAAPA he claimed the Faith Court Award for "the most outstanding first year violinist”, beginning an illustrious musical career. Also a gifted choral musician Adam joined Vocal Evolution in 2007, rising to the position of Associate Musical Director and co-leading the chorus to its first gold medal at the National Barbershop Chorus Competition with Alex Morris.
In 2009, his quartet, 3 Men & A Tenor competed at the National Barbershop Quartet Competition and won the bronze medal in the open contest and gold in the youth contest. During his time at WAAPA he studied choral conducting under Micheál McCarthy for the full 3 years of his degree and completed his Bachelor of Music (Violin Performance Major) in 2011.
Guest Director - Perry Joyce
Having undertaken a Bachelor of Music majoring in composition at UWA, Perry Joyce is a talented young composer, singer and conductor. His compositions have received a plethora of awards and are frequently performed around Australia. Perry is an accomplished choral director hailing from the WA opera chorus, Giovanni consort, and Rejoice Gospel Choiramong many others. More recently he established West Australian Young Voices (WAYV) with Prue Ashurst, a premier WA youth choir.
