In 2015, our musical director Lionel Pierson seized the opportunity to form a small mixed harmony chorus to compete in the Young Singers in Harmony Australian National Youth Chorus Competition. This was the first time that Barbershop Harmony Australia (BHA) allowed a mixed harmony category in its longstanding men’s competition.
Three months after forming, we performed on the competition stage in Melbourne, at BHA's biennial national competition, where we managed to come away with the title of Young Singers in Harmony National Chorus Champions!
What We Do (be doo be doo be doot doot doot do it)
The Baden Street Singers are daring, diverse, and down for anything acapella. We sing barbershop, contemporary, classical, world, jazz - you name it! We're united by our singing talent, our high-level musicianship, and our overarching mission: to put on a darn good show and share the love!
We perform in all sorts of contests. We have appeared in shows as guests of Vocal Evolution, as well as publicising and fundraising for the choir through busking at various locations around Perth and Fremantle over the summer months.
In 2016, we have high ambitions towards outreach programmes, competitions and high calibre home performances. Projects that we will be taking on this year include: harmony outreach into youth and schools across the Perth metropolitan area, singing at the Denmark Festival of Voice in June and competing at the Barbershop Harmony Australia National Competitions in October being held in Newcastle, NSW.
Going forward, we hope that The Baden Street Singers can strengthen the connections between men’s and women’s barbershop, representing young singers from both Barbershop Harmony Australia and the Australian Sweet Adelines.
