The Baden Street Singers formed in early June 2015, when musical director, Lionel Pierson, seized the opportunity to enter a small mixed harmony chorus into the Young Singers in Harmony Australian National Youth Chorus Competition. This was the first time that Barbershop Harmony Australia (BHA) opened its biennial national competition to include women in its longstanding men-only competition.
Just three months after forming, the group's first performance came about on the competition stage in Melbourne, where they were awarded the title of Young Singers in Harmony - National Chorus Champions.
Since then, The Baden Street Singers have lived up to their champion status in various competitions throughout 2016 and 2017. In addition to rehearsing and competing at a very high standard, the group is active in the wider community with concerts, workshops, festivals and educational outreach programs.
The group (typically consisting of 20 - 25 singers) captures audiences with their pure vocal talent, their undeniably charming stage presence, and their bold artistic vision. But it's their ensemble dynamic that makes them truly special. In a celebration of diversity and individual differences, united by a passion for singing and guided by expert musical leadership - The Baden Street Singers are, quite simply, unlike any vocal ensemble you've seen before.
After their smash hit FRINGE WORLD show, Acapocalyse, The Baden Street Singers began their current season with a round of auditions, a major restructuring of the group, and a newly elected management committee. In June this year, the group put on a stellar showcase concert - Seasons of Love - which featured themselves and other local a cappella groups: Menagerie, No Rechoirments and Five7.
After qualifying in the Western Region for BHA's National Convention, The Baden Street Singers are preparing to travel to Adelaide in September 2018 to defend their position as Chorus Champions. They are excited to bring their fresh, highly-polished mixed barbershop set to the national stage.
